As the fall weather gets cooler, the night comes sooner and the leaves start to turn it seems to signal a change in appetite, too. Menus feature more hearty soups and stews and the chilled dishes of summer go out of style like white shoes after Labor Day. Soups are a year round thing, of course. But falling temperatures often mean a rise in soup pots on the stove to help warm us from the inside out. Soups have long been associated with stick to your ribs nourishment and something good-for-what-ails-you; but if your number one health concern is weight control and keeping your cholesterol in check there are a few guidelines to follow when choosing what to ladle into your bowl.
One of the sure signs of autumn’s arrival is a surge of traffic around area malls as stores up their advertising for big fall sales and fashionistas hit the racks in search of the must have shapes and colors of the season. The hunt is on for shoe booties, chunky sweaters, cropped jackets, wide leg pants, waist cinching big belts and everything goes with gray! This fashion mission is a lot of work and you can really work up an appetite. But, before you lament in front of a dressing room mirror that those skinny jeans just don’t look the way they do in the magazines make sure that your trip to the mall’s food court doesn’t add inches to any problem areas.
Hmmmm. What looks good? Now, you may have been warned against indulging your end of the day hunger pangs and rightfully so, if those after-hours calories put you over the top of your daily caloric budget. But, when those midnight munchies strike, you often can’t help yourself. So here are some suggestions for midnight snacks which can actually be good for you.
A friend of mine, who worked at the now closed Uptown Peasant in Phipps Plaza, told me a story about a certain Atlanta media mogul who came up with the perfect plan to enjoy a cocktail at lunch without anyone noticing. He would order a bowl of the restaurant’s gazpacho and quietly ask the waiter to “walk the soup by the bar and sneak in a shot of vodka.” He would often enthusiastically enjoy two or three bowls of this special gazpacho while the rest of the guests wondered when he would move on to the entrée.
There are many connections between our eyes and our appetite. The observation that “you eat first with your eyes” refers to the initial appeal created by the visual presentation of a dish.
“You want fries with that?” is not a simple Yes or No question for folks keeping track of their fat and calorie intake when they’re eating out. Instead, the right response is further inquiry, “Well, first tell me how they’re made.”
